Nested in the rolling foothills of Southwestern Alberta in the shadows of the mountains, is the beautiful town of Cardston. Located just 30 minutes from Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park, Cardston has something to offer everyone! The Town of Cardston is a thriving community that serves a trading area of 15,000. The Town of Cardston offers several world class tourist facilities that reflect the pioneer heritage of Southern Alberta such as the REMINGTON CARRIAGE MUSEUM, the COURTHOUSE MUSEUM, THE CARD PIONEER HOME and other historical tourist sites. Visitors will enjoy the way of life that Cardston offers.
In 1887, in one of the century's last covered wagon migrations, Mormon Pioneers from Utah traveled to Alberta by covered wagon. Today, Cardston is returning to its' pioneer heritage; the era of the 'horse and buggy'. As in the other Mormon settlements, church buildings were high on the list of priorities. While still crowded in their first little mud-chinked log houses and barely able to seek out an existence, the settlers began talking of building a temple. At great sacrifice a large church was soon built, followed by a great brick stone tabernacle, and finally in 1913 construction started on the magnificent granite temple around which the town nestles today. It was the first Mormon temple outside the United States and above and beyond its architectural beauty and uniqueness, it has enormous religious significance for church members.
Today, Cardston has a population of almost 3,500 people and it's land mass covers about 7 square kilometers.
